For years, the African-American Leadership Team has attempted to work with the District on creating systemic change that more adequately addresses and ultimately resolves issues involving equity, social justice, and the systemic racism that exists in our schools. Although members of this group have worked tirelessly in promoting change, change did not come and their efforts were largely ignored by the district as a whole. More recently, the District created the Race and Equity in Education Committee, where staff were asked to share their voices, but again no action was taken. More on this history can be found here.
The fact is: change should have come years ago.
We can wait no longer.
The Black Lives Matter demonstrations around the world highlighted the urgent need to eradicate systematic racism found in all of our institutions, including in our own district. Many staff members in District 214 joining this group are new to the cause and are rallying behind the foundation already laid by the African-American Leadership Team and the Racial Equity in Education Committee.
The D214 Justice Group was recently formed in support of these voices that need to be heard. It is the hope that this group, representing educators and educational support personnel across District 214, can build on this important work, learn from those who paved the way and help educate the community, the Board of Education, and others on the reasons why this change is needed.
